Our story

Four generations behind the counter

It all began around 1920, when Josep Arxe fished and sold his catch. After he married our grandmother Corona, the selling grew until it became a business of its own.

In those days the fish was sold in La Bisbal d'Empordà, and not many years later Pilar, Corona's daughter, took the stall on. Our grandmother stepped back to make way for her, and today the face of Peixos Pilar is Montse.

Alongside her you will always find Rosa, a friend and workmate since she was sixteen. We care about how fish is handled and we love our trade: that is why, as ever, our customers and friends hold us in such affection.

How we got here

The counter

What you will find

What is on the counter changes every day with whatever comes up from the auction. This is what we usually have and what we can prepare for you.

The star

Palamós prawn (gamba de Palamós)

The jewel of this coast. You will know it by its bright red shell, its full head and its firm body. The size, the quantity and the price change every day with the auction: ask us what today's prawns are like and which ones suit the way you want to cook them.

From the auction

Fresh fish of the day

Whatever came in that morning or that afternoon: rockfish for a suquet, oily fish, fish sold by the slice. We will scale it, clean it and cut it exactly as you need it.

Basket full of freshly bought prawns and shellfish

For the rice

Shellfish, cuttlefish and squid

Cuttlefish, squid, langoustines, clams, mussels: everything from the sea for a rice dish, a fideuà or the griddle. If you need a particular amount, order it and we will set it aside for you.

For the aperitif

Salt-cured fish and fish roe

The old classics to open a meal with: salt-cured fish and fish roe, to slice wafer-thin and eat with bread and a drizzle of oil.

Where to buy

The market in the morning, the auction in the afternoon

In Palamós the fish goes to auction in the afternoon, when the boats come back in. That is why you will find us in two places at two different times: at the Market, with the catch already picked out, and at the auction, just as it arrives.

At the Market, in the morning

Tuesday to Saturday, 8am to 1pm

Everything already picked out and ready to take away. This is where you will find the widest choice of fish sold by the slice, and where we will clean and cut whatever you buy.

  • Fishing boats moored in Palamós harbour, where the fish for the suquet comes from

    50 min · 4 people

    Suquet de peix

Suquet, the Catalan fishermen's stew: rockfish, cracked potatoes and a picada to bind it all together.

  • Palamós prawns just in from the auction

    10 min · 2-4 people

    Griddled Palamós prawns

The most honest way to eat them: a very hot griddle, salt and nothing else. Five minutes.

  • Basket of freshly bought Palamós prawns

    55 min · 4 people

    Soupy seafood rice

Soupy, not creamy: the stock made from prawn heads and mantis shrimp does all the work. A Sunday dish.

  • Fresh cuttlefish on the Peixos Pilar counter

    50 min · 4 people

    Cuttlefish with peas

Sea and garden, the way it has always been done. Long, gentle cooking and the cuttlefish turns as tender as butter.

What are your opening hours?

At the Market, Tuesday to Saturday from 8am to 1pm. At the auction, Monday to Friday from 4.30pm to 8pm.

It is the part we enjoy most. Tell us how many of you there are, what you fancy cooking and what budget you have in mind, and we will tell you what is good that day.
